Finger infection can be treated very simply and most of the time it can be done from your home. An untreated infected finger can further lead to the spread of infection to the hand and to other parts of the body. You can utilize simple home remedies to treat finger infection. To treat an infected finger you have to first soak the finger in warm salty water for up to an hour to get the desired softness of skin. The skin is then pressed in order to remove as much pus as possible from the wound. Once the pus has been squeezed out you should treat the finger with an antiseptic cream or lotion. If there is still pus remaining in the wound, you will have to repeat the process a couple of more times to get the pus completely cleared out of the wound. You could even try pricking the wound with a sterile needle to let the pus ooze out.

There are different types of finger infections such as cellulitis, paronychia, herpetic whitlow, and flexor tenosynovitis. There is also something called deep space infection that takes place between the web space of the fingers and is characterized by swelling and pain in the space between the fingers. When this occurs the site may feel warm to the touch and red in color. As the swelling increases because of the infection, the fingers will be spread farther apart due to pressure. The area around the center may be soft because of the pus collected there.

Though an infected finger is usually caused by some sort of bacteria, the herpetic whitlow is the one finger infection that is caused by the herpes simplex virus.
